When we look through social media – or media in general – we’re often inundated with pictures of the rich and famous living their glamorous lives, spending money like there’s no tomorrow. It can get tedious and frustrating to see these people spend so much on themselves – especially when they’re not using any of their blessings to help others.
That’s why it’s so refreshing to hear about a celebrity who has been flying under the radar and using his resources to help those in need.
While caring for his sister, Kim, during her decade-long battle with leukemia, actor Keanu Reeves became passionate about fighting cancer and finding a cure. He donated millions to various charity organizations and even started a foundation of his own, though no one knew it was his foundation for years because he never attached his name to it.
In an interview with Ladies’ Home Journal in 2009, Reeves admitted that he had started a foundation to help kids with cancer and fund cancer research, but he remained ever humble about his role in it.
“I have a private foundation that’s been running for five or six years, and it helps aid a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research,” he revealed.
“I don’t like to attach my name to it, I just let the foundation do what it does.”
This isn’t the first time this humble actor has been “outed” for his good deeds. Over the years, many people have come forward with stories about his generosity and kindness.
“Back in the late 90s and fresh out of college I got my first job as an assistant prop designer on the set of Chain Reaction (Keanu was a supporting actor with Morgan Freeman),” shared a Reddit user who goes by bo2dd2.
“EVERY DAY for the last few weeks of filming, Keanu treated the stage hands and ‘grunt workers’ (including myself) by taking us out for free breakfast and lunch. He was genuinely a very nice guy to work with.
“Since then, I’ve worked on about 30 different sets and have never met an actor as generous and friendly as him. Most actors I’ve seen and worked with are total d——- who always think they are better than us. Keanu on the other hand, at the very least, was socially approachable and definitely kindhearted.”
After bo2dd2 shared his experience, many others on Reddit chimed in, relaying stories of times Reeves gave rides to people with car trouble and gifted large bonuses to people who had fallen on hard times.
An article in the Daily Mail also revealed that Reeves shared around $100 million with just the special effects and costume teams who worked on The Matrix trilogy!
By all accounts, Reeves is kind, generous, and humble – a rarity in Hollywood. We could use more people like him!
