Every love story is beautiful and unique in its own way, but there are some that truly take our breath away.
Take the story of Paul and Agnes Fitz.
The pair met when they were both students at Margaretta High School in Ohio. Paul was a senior; Agnes was a sophomore.
According to their family, Paul was in a huddle with his basketball teammates talking about girls when he decided he’d better make his move.
“My dad didn’t want to lose her to some other basketball player so he decided he was going to get engaged to her,” their daughter, Lori Fitz-Arnold, explained.
Paul proposed to Agnes on prom night and they married in 1950.
The next 68 years were happy ones. The couple had nine children together and eventually welcomed 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren (and had one more great-grandchild on the way).
“They never fought, never argued. I only remember one argument in their whole life and that’s when mom wanted to go to work,” their son, Paul Fitz, said.
“They were always together holding hands, kissing, you know, and they loved their family,” daughter Mary Jo Fitz-Frasca added.
But time, as it does, marched on and Paul knew that he would soon have to say goodbye to his bride.
On Friday, Paul lay next to his beloved in their family home and held her hand as she quietly slipped away.
The family gathered together to comfort Paul and mourn the loss of Agnes, but as they did so, something happened that left them all stunned.
On Saturday, just one day after Agnes’s passing, Paul also took his last breath and joined his wife in eternity.
“They spent their last days side-by-side and hand-in-hand, surrounded by family,” their joint obituary read.
Paul and Agnes had vowed to stay together “till death do us part,” but not even death could keep them apart for long.
“They were so committed to each other and their family, and they were so loved,” said the couple’s granddaughter, Danielle Keegan. “They definitely set the bar high for a true love story.”
