Back in 1928, Gerber held a contest to find the face that would represent their brand. The winning baby was Ann Turner Cook and she has been the face of Gerber all these years.
Starting in 2010, though, Gerber decided to hold a yearly contest for their Gerber spokesbaby. Each year, thousands of proud parents send in pictures of their little ones and, out of all of those, one child is chosen as the year’s Gerber Baby.
This year’s winner has people extra excited! Gerber announced that – beating out more than 140,000 entries – the 2018 Gerber Baby is little Lucas, the first Gerber Baby with Down syndrome!
Lucas’ parents, Jason and Cortney Warren, are incredibly happy and proud to have their son acting as the official Gerber Baby. When they first got the news, they could hardly believe it!
They said they hope Lucas will be able to shine a light on the special needs community and help get rid of the stigmas surrounding it.
“We’re hoping this will impact everyone — that it will shed a little bit of light on the special needs community and help more individuals with special needs be accepted and not limited,” Jason said. “They have the potential to change the world, just like everybody else.”
Cortney, who decided to enter the contest on a whim, says the adorable photo she shared of Lucas in a mint green shirt and bow tie perfectly captures his personality.
“He’s very outgoing and never meets a stranger,” she said. “He loves to play, loves to laugh and loves to make other people laugh.”
Gerber CEO and president Bill Partyka said Lucas’ contagious smile immediately won over the team.
“Every year, we choose the baby who best exemplifies Gerber’s longstanding heritage of recognizing that every baby is a Gerber baby,” he said. “This year, Lucas is the perfect fit.”
As the proud parents were interviewed about the big win, Jason had a hard time holding back his emotion. His love for his son and his joy at seeing him recognized have touched thousands of hearts around the world.
The Warrens know Lucas is just a little guy, but they hope he will be able to make a big impact that will change his life as well as the lives of so many others around the world who also have special needs.
“He may have Down syndrome, but he’s always Lucas first,” Cortney said. “He’s got an awesome personality and he goes through the milestones of every child … we’re hoping when he grows up and looks back on this, he’ll be proud of himself and not ashamed of his disability.”
In addition to winning the Gerber Baby title, the Warrens also received a $50,000 cash prize which they said will go toward Lucas’ education.
