Police officers are always ready to serve and protect, but they never know exactly what that’s going to look like. For one Marion County, Florida, deputy, it meant saving a tiny baby’s life after work one day.
K9 Deputy Jeremie Nix was driving home after work Wednesday night when he noticed another car with its hazard lights on. As the car pulled over to the side of the road, Nix saw a hand frantically waving him over from the window.
Even though he was off-duty, Nix wasted no time in driving over to the car to see what was going on.
Very soon, it was evident that a life hung in the balance.
A woman got out of the car holding her baby, who was unresponsive. She begged Nix to help her revive him.
“Don’t let my baby die!” she screamed.
A dashcam captured the deputy’s heroic efforts to revive the baby as the mom called 911. But Nix knew every second mattered when it came to saving this baby. When he didn’t hear any sirens coming, he decided to take matters into his own hands.
“I heard this one breath that was very faint,” Nix recalled. “I turned and I remember thinking, ‘I don’t hear sirens. I don’t hear nobody coming. I don’t have time.’ I just gripped him as tight as I could and I put it in drive and just went.”
As the baby’s mother followed, Nix turned on his lights and raced to the emergency room, which was only about half a mile away. Emergency personnel were already waiting outside the doors when he got there to give medical attention to the baby.
Thankfully, the deputy’s instincts proved right. He got the baby to the hospital in the nick of time and doctors were able to revive him. Today he is doing just fine.
“We are happy to report that Baby Kingston is doing very well and doctors say he will make a full recovery!!” the sheriff’s department said in a statement. “Doctors also said that because of K9 Deputy Nix’s actions, Baby Kingston is alive today. We are tremendously proud of Deputy Nix and we can already see that he and Baby Kingston will have a deep connection that will last a lifetime!!”
Little Kingston is now back home with his mom and is “happy and healthy.”
We’re so glad Deputy Nix was there to save the day! He is the perfect example of what a true hero looks like!
