Sometimes it is at the exact moment that all hope seems lost that a glimmer of light appears.
That’s what happened when doctors told 13-year-old Trenton’s parents that there was no hope for their son.
Two months ago, the teen was riding in a small utility trailer when it flipped over and landed on top of him.
“I hit the concrete and the trailer landed on top of my head. After that, I don’t remember anything,” Trenton said.
He suffered seven skull fractures and actually died before doctors were able to revive him.
“All I saw was a stretcher with his feet hanging out. He was dead a total of 15 minutes,” Trenton’s mother, Jennifer, recalled. “When he came back, they said he would never be normal again. They told me the oxidation problems would be so bad to his brain, that he would be a vegetable if he even made it.”
In the days following the crash, Trenton was barely breathing. Doctors were keeping him alive, but his organs were getting more and more damaged in the process. Jennifer made the heartbreaking decision to take him off life support and donate his organs to five other children who were in need of transplants.
“Five kids needed organs that matched him,” she said. “It was unfair to keep bringing him back, because it was just damaging his organs even more.”
But just as doctors were getting ready to take Trenton off life support, a miracle happened.
Trenton began showing signs of brain activity and movement. Then he began breathing on his own.
In late March, the amazing young teen woke up and began speaking full sentences!
It was then that he told his parents and doctors about what he had seen while he was unconscious and why he thought he had woken up.
“I was in an open field walking straight,” he recalled. “There’s no other explanation but God. There’s no other way. Even doctors said it.”
Trenton is not out of the woods yet. He has already had three brain surgeries and is facing another, and he still suffers nerve pain and daily seizures. But he is ALIVE, something doctors didn’t think should be possible.
We wish this courageous young man all the best with his recovery. We know his life was spared for a reason, and we’re sure he is going to do amazing things!
