You may be familiar with a movie that came out several years ago called P.S. I Love You. In it, the main character’s husband dies of cancer, but before he died he planned out elaborate surprises for her and wrote special messages that would help her get through her grief.
As sweet and poignant as that story is, it is a work of fiction. This one, however, is not.
Bailey Sellers’ father died of cancer when she was just 16 years old. Losing a parent at any age is difficult, but losing one during childhood is especially painful.

Even though the family knew they could lose him, it was hard to accept he was gone. They worked to get back to the routine of daily life, incredibly aware that a big portion of each of their hearts was missing.
But when Bailey’s 17th birthday rolled around, she had a surprise waiting for her that left her stunned. She discovered her father had planned something special for her before his passing.
The teen opened the door to find a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a sweet card from her father.
“Before he died, he pre paid flowers so I could receive them every year on my birthday,” Bailey explained.
The flowers kept coming for several years, a touching love offering from her father who has been watching over her from heaven.
This year, though, on Bailey’s 21st birthday, the card was especially poignant. Her dad explained this would be the last card she would be receiving from him.
“Bailey,” the card read, “This is my last love letter to you until we meet again. I do not want you to shed another tear for me my baby girl for I am in a better place. You are and will always be the most precious jewel I was given. It is your 21st birthday and I want you to always respect your momma and stay true to yourself. Be happy and live life to the fullest. I will still be with you through every milestone, just look around and there I will be. I love you Boo Boo and Happy Birthday!!!! Daddy”
Knowing this was the last gift she would receive from her father was heartbreaking.
“Every year I looked forward to my birthday because I felt like he was still here with me but this is the last year I get them so it’s so heart breaking,” Bailey said.
But while she may not receive any more physical gifts from her father, she will hold the precious memories they made together in her heart. Before his passing, as he battled his cancer, he made sure his baby girl was taken care of and that she would always know just how much he loved her. No other gift could be as precious.
While life is not the same without her dad by her side, Bailey knows he is always with her in her heart. His memory will carry on in the legacy he left behind.
