When Carolyn Reichle and Jeremy Floyd first walked into the DeLand Animal Hospital in DeLand, Florida, with their dog, it seemed like a regular check-up. Soon, though, the truth would be revealed, and it was much more ominous.
As the couple sat in the waiting area, Carolyn seemed fidgety and nervous. She kept her sunglasses on and kept looking around the room as if looking for a way to escape.
After a little while, Carolyn got up to use the bathroom. As she made her way back to the waiting area, she quietly slipped a note to the vet technician who was sitting at the front desk.
When the vet tech read the note, her heart instantly dropped:
Call the cops. My boyfriend is threatening me. He has a gun. Please don’t let him know.
The technician quickly showed the note to her coworker, who was standing next to her. Without a word, they hurried into another room, shut the door, and dialed 9-1-1.
Carolyn and Jeremy were taken back to an exam room where they were told to wait for the vet to come in. Little did Jeremy know that as they waited, police were on their way to arrest him.
Soon, several officers burst into the room, seized Jeremy’s gun, and cuffed him.
After Jeremy was led out of the room, Carolyn burst into tears. Then she told the responding officers about the hell she had endured over the previous two days.
Jeremy had beat Carolyn up on Wednesday night. During the spat, the couple struggled over Jeremy’s gun, sending two bullets through a wall of their home.
Jeremy beat Carolyn so badly that she was laid up in bed all day Thursday with a head injury. He refused to let her leave the home to get help and continued to threaten her.
Afraid for her life, Carolyn concocted a plan to get help. On Friday, she convinced Jeremy that she needed to take their dog to the vet.
Jeremy agreed to let Carolyn take the dog, but insisted on going with her. He kept his loaded gun in hand and threatened to kill Carolyn and her family if she tried anything.
Despite the threats, Carolyn bravely put her escape plan into action. Thankfully, the vet technicians heeded her silent cry for help and were able to get her away from her awful situation safely.
Jeremy was arrested and held without bail in Volusia County Branch Jail on a number of charges, including domestic violence, aggravated assault with a firearm, and false imprisonment.
Deputies took Carolyn to a nearby hospital where she was treated for a head injury, a black eye, and bruises all over her body.
It is heartbreaking that anyone would have to go through such a horrific ordeal, but we are glad Carolyn had the courage and wherewithal to escape her captor and these vet technicians did what needed to be done to save her life.
